On January 18 and 19, many Nigerian leaders will abandon everything else to party with former president Obasanjo
Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital is now wearing a festive mood as Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the South-West concludes arrangements to celebrate the former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The celebration is an initiative of the
PDP and has been embraced by other state governments irrespective of
political affiliations.
The celebration is a two day event scheduled to hold on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 January, 2013.
It will take place at Obasanjo
Presidential Library and Ake Palace playing ground in Abeokuta and the
former Interim Head of State, Ernest Shonekan, will chair the ceremony.
President Goodluck Jonathan; former
president of Ghana, John Kuffour; all state governors and a host of
other personalities from within and outside the country are expected to
attend the events.
On the first day of the programme, there
would be a lecture, with a focus on Mr. Obasanjo, which is to be
delivered by Mr. Kuffour.
The lecture will focus on his military career.
On the eve on the January 18, there will
be a traditional/cultural night with the Jigawa State Governor, Sule
Lamido, as chairman.
On the second day, the celebration will
take place at Alake Palace playing ground and will be chaired by Bamanga
Tukur, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.
President Goodluck Jonathan will be the special guest of honour with other state governors as guests.
The streets of Abeokuta are already
adorned with flags carrying Mr. Obasanjo’s pictures in preparation for
the ceremony. Also, the venues are already beautified with attractive
colours.
The usual aso-ebi, Ankara fabrics, which will be the dress code of the day, has been distributed to guests.
Security has also been tightened in the Ogun State capital in preparation for the event.
